Did You Know?

Did You Know? Video
1. In the original video by Karl Fisch and Scott McLeod,I was not amazed about the facts and the numbers behind it. I knew of most of the facts, but, I did not know how the numbers are calculated for the facts. You have to really be on your math and knowledge game to know the numbers behind the facts mentioned. I would not be able to figure out the numbers. The numbers for each fact surprised me. In the past, I have thought of most of the facts mentioned. The future is going to be interesting for the world because every number mentioned will be even bigger than expected. In the Strange version of  "Did You Know?", I realized that the numbers and facts were compared to the students in previous EDM310 classes and high school students, such as cellphones and computers. I am not amazed about the numbers on computers and cellphones because every person in my household has his/her own personal laptop and cellphone, even my 10 year old brother.I have been searching for a job every since my high school , and I have not found one, which means I highly agree with the facts about jobs in both videos.

Mr.Winkle Wakes
Mr. Winkle Wakes

2. In this video, created by Matthew Needleman, I definitely can relate to the ways that Mr.Winkle felt when he walked in those places. When he walked in the office, he was aggravated with the constant printing of paper from the machine. When he left from there, he went to the hospital and saw a machine he did not recognize, such as x-ray machines. I can relate to this part of the video because I do not like going to hospitals because someone very close to me stayed in and out of the hospitals. Every time I went to visit, that person felt weaker and weaker.I do not like hospitals sometimes because I do not like to see loved ones or people in pain. I  get so emotional at hospitals that I have to leave the hospital to calm myself down to not show my emotions. I do not like  crying in front of people, but now, I just let myself cry in front of  loved ones because crying can mean  various feelings (laughter, joy, pain). When Mr. Winkle went inside the school, he became aware of the environment. I can relate to this part because I have been to school everyday since preschool. To me, it seems school is all I do, which is a good thing because nowadays, education is everything and your lifeline to you. In my opinion, I think that Mr.Winkle did not want anything to change in the world while he was asleep. Like Mr.Winkle, I was afraid of change. But as I grew older, I found out that change is good in most situations. As I grew up,things began changing in my life that I was not ready for, but I had to change to get on with my life.

The Importance of Creativity
Ken Robinson3.I watched this video when I was Baggett's class last semester. This video has a variety of information on how technology is making creativity worse for students when they are at school. To me, I believe that Sir Ken Richardson is a phenomenal supporter of education. The fact that students' do not use their abilities, skills, and talents means to me that they are wasting their abilities, skills, and talents that God has given them, which is not a good thing to do with the gifts God has created in you. I can relate to my opinion because it has happened to me several of times. Throughout the video, Ken Richardson says many jokes, which I thought were funny yet very interesting to think about. I do agree with the fact that schools demolish creativity for students. In the future, I believe that schools will more able to make creativity better for students. Most students that I know love to be creative in everything they can do. Creativity is the most important thing in education because without it students cannot be imaginable with their thoughts and feelings. I highly agree that women have the ability to multitask more than men because my grandmother,my mother, my sister, and I multitask on a daily basis, especially my grandmother and my mother. I believe that our job is to better the education of children in the future so they would enhance a better than that of today's education. I believe that the education world will become better.

A Vision for 21st Century Learning
4.In this video, the main arguments were as follow:

21st Century Education

  1. Digital Technology
  2. Cons to Networking
  3. Instant Gratification
  4. Global Connectivity
Altogether, with the arguments included, this video was a summary on how to make children learn when in fact they do   not. The solution to this is to make educational games on computers and on gaming systems. In many classrooms, the children are just taking notes on what the teacher is lecturing about. Most classrooms barely use textbooks. When children are just sitting in class taking notes, they become bored, and come to the conclusion that school is not fun. But with educational games, the children will get incentive to play  and learn from the game. When I was little, I had a series of  CD games, such as KidSpeak (learn different languages) and Cluefinders (mainly different math skills). I played Cluefinders the most because I love games with a mystery behind them. Using learning games for children will give the children the incentive not to give up on their education. When I graduated from a junior community college, I was afraid to make the transition to the University of South Alabama because the college experience would be different. The reason why  I felt this way because the community college was smaller compared to the University of South Alabama, and because I had the feeling that the instructors for my classes would not like me. Most of the time, I define myself as a person that is judgmental because I judge people before I get to know them, which is not good.As of now, I am not the judgmental type of person.

Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
5.In this video, I love the way the teacher gives her students the chance to teach for a day.I found it interesting when the terraform students taught the teacher how to terraform. The teacher uses different terminology everyday, which she expects her students to know what they mean.I strongly agree that students do better in classes when technology is involved through the class. In elementary school, I was type of student that did not do so well when it came to doing book work for homework and classwork. As I progressed my education, I became more technical based to my education, which is an accomplishment for me. I love to accomplish the goals I set for me. For awhile, my mindset is to get my education to help educate the future of the world. When I am at home, I try to help my little brother and little whenever they need help. Most of the times, they will go to our dad because they believe that our dad knows everything.Sometimes, our dad sends them to me when he does not know what to do in that subject.

Activity 2- EDM310 is Different

EDM310 is Different
From reading EDM310 is Different, I learned that you have to have dedication and creativity. On the first day of class, I thought that I honestly wasn't going to like this class. Now, I love this class because I am willing to do everything it takes for this class. Dr.Strange is the type of teacher that is particular with what he wants from his students, which is what i would do for my future classroom of students, as a teacher.

9 Differences in EDM310
This youtube video was created DR.Strange.In this youtube, he talks about and discusses the 9 differences in EDM310 versus a regular class. The diferences are as followed:
1. Behave like a professional in EDM310- simply means to do everything with your best effort, to have positive attitude while you are putting in your best effort, and to dress appropriately (in videos) to show that you are willing to show a positive attitude and to to display your best effort. One of the best things for me to do is "to do work on time" because I have always done my best when I have deadlines. I try to do my best when it comes to grammar because my grandmother is a retired English teacher, and she will correct me when   something I said or wrote is spelled wrong or written wrong.
2. You are leaving an intellectual trial- simply means that whatever you do in EDM310 will be on the internet and can be googled.
3.I don't know. Let's find out.-simply means it you don't know how to do something, ask for assistance from the lab assistants. I do this alot to make sure I do it exactly the way it is suppose to be done.No question is a stupid question unless the question is not asked. In EDM310, you are being tracked on what you do, how you do it, when you do it, and where you do it.
4.Questions to think about: 1. Should all teachers be technologically literate?, 2. Are you technologically literate?, and What do we mean by technologically literacy?- 1. I think that all teachers should be technologically literate because everything is going digitally including education, but all teachers are not technologically literate. 2. To some extent, I am technologically literate. 3.To have technologically literacy to me means that a person knows and has the knowledge of technology.
5. Honest self reflection, not grades- This is the best thing I like about this class because you are graded on what you post on your blog, but it has be honest and reflects to you. I like to be honest in everything I do in another reason why I like this class.
6. Project based learning requires learning- I love project based assignment now because I have learned how to do them in EDM310 and in EDU301 with Mrs.Baggett.I loved her class, too.
7. Creativity is encouraged- simply means to be creative with the work you do. I try to do my best to be creative.
8.EDM310 is a worldwide class-simply means that EDM310 is not your ordinary class in the state of Alabama; instead it's a worldwide class, meaning that EDM310 is a class in the world. With this class being a worldwide class, you will establish friendly relationships with other people around the world that know about EDM310, which I think is really cool. I love to meet new people.
9. You must invest 9 hours a week in  EDM310- I believe that investing 9 hours a week for EDM310 is a good number of hours to invest because all other classes (University of South Alabama) have 3 credit hours. So this class is like having 3 classes with 3 credit hour courses, except EDM310 is better than having 3 classes with 3 credit hour courses. Now, I love EDM310.

Aspects of EDM310
I like the fact that EDM310 is green, which means EDM310 uses no paper. Everything you do in EDM310 is done through technology. Last semester was my first semester attending University of South Alabama. I had 2 blended classes, which means you meet on certain days for instructions (25%), but all the assignments you have are online (75%). Since then, I love blended classes. I learn the things I need to know better this way because I am the type of visual learner that learns better independently. Having the help of former EDM310 students is a great advantage because they can help you with the problems you will have or encounter. Multimedia writing (text, audio, video) sounds interesting to me. EDM310 impacts the communtiy through the college of education at the University of South Alabama and the local school systems.EDM310 is free- no use of books or materials because EDM310 is computer-based,which I love.

Blog Post 1

1. Hi, my name is LaWana Threatt. I live in Calvert,Al, which is about 45 minutes from the University of South Alabama. This semester, I have classes Monday through Thursday, and driving back forth put a toll on me. I take this as a disadvantage because of the fact I have to drive long distance. My major is Early Childhood Education, but the College of Education as my major under Elementary Education because the College of Education will develop while I'm attending at South. I like to browse the web, be with family and friends, to meet new people, and to have fun. I could not ask for a better family because they are always for me, even through our ups and downs. Every once in awhile, we have family game night where we play scrabble, dominoes, and card games. We have fun the whole night through with laughter and with joking around, and that's why my family is the greatness. I entered into the College of Education because I love to be around kids. In my profession, I would like to own a childcare business. My passion is being around children because they just put a spark in me, and makes me smile. Whether it is at home or school, I do tasks and assignments the best with deadlines and instructions. I love to learn about the things I do not know about or the things I want to learn about.

2. At the beginning of Randy Pausch YouTube video on Time Management, he specifically outlines what he's going to talk about. The following topics are:
   1.How to set goals,
   2. How to avoid wasting time,
   3. How to deal with the boss, meaning how to deal with your advisors, from a non-academic viewpoint,
   4. How to be responsible with other people, and
   5. How to deal with the real problems, such as stress and procrastination.
After Randy makes his pointers known, he points out that the Americans  are very poor when it comes to dealing with time management as a commodity, and that we are extravagant when it comes to dealing with money as a commodity. Randy makes these points on Americans based on our culture. While lecturing,
Randy displays the following on a Smart Board:
"Goals, Priorities, and Planning", which has the following questions:
    1. Why am I doing this? What is the goal?
    2. Why will I succeed?
    3. What happens if I chose not to do it?
    4. Doing things right versus doing the right things
    5. 100 things to do in my life
From these 5 points, he says that people don't know how and why goals are made, and that goals are made because people focus on doing that task right rather than doing than doing the right thing. I didn't understand the concept of it until I heard what Randy. Randy noted that doing things right is very dangerous to do, which I strongly agree. It is better to the right things because you are safer that way. Your time and your experiences are valuable because that's how employees know whether you are capable for a job position. When Randy said "Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment",it seemed to mean the opposite for me until I thought about it for awhile.

Three pointers of Planning:
1. Failing to plan is planning to fail
2. Plan each day, each week, and each semester
3. You can always change your plan, but only once you have one!

To Do Lists
1. Break things down into small steps
2. Do the ugliest thing first

I do not know Randy Pausch, but he gives good pointers and advice on each of the topics in his video.

Practice Post

This is just a practice post to see if my blog is working.
